“Little Sister” is a rock and roll song written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. It was originally released as a single in 1961 by American singer Elvis Presley, who turned it into a No. 5 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The single (as a double A-side with “(Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame”) reached No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart. An answer song with the same melody, but different lyrics was recorded and released under the title “Hey, Memphis” by Lavern Baker on Atlantic Records (Atlantic 2119-A) in September 1961. In 1970 Elvis Presley performs this song as part of a medley with “Get Back” in the rockumentary film, That’s the Way It Is.

Bergenfest music festival day 2 – 2016

Day two was “Wilco day”.

One of the best bands in the world definitely. And when Tweedy is in a good mood, as he was yesterday, Wilco delivers.

Bergenfest Music Festival Day 1 – June 16, 2016

Lovely start yesterday @ Bergenfest 2016.

The first concert this year was Israel Nash, and what a start! Wonderful stuff, will be hard to top even for Wilco later today.

Israel Nash and his formidable band had been given the difficult task of opening Bergenfest music festival this year. The concert was set at four o’clock in the afternoon, it was warm and humid and people were slowly seeping into the festival area. A hard job for any band, but Israel Nash managed it without any problems. In fact he and his band gave us the best show of the first day at the festival. Great sound, good songs, a tight band and a happy audience.

OK, it’s a bit like a mix of David Crosby,Neil Young and Jonathan Wilson, unashamedly indebted to the cosmic side of American music, but how can that be a bad thing? We loved it!

The guitars swelled over us in waves and the California sound washed away all our doubts and fears of the future of music. Hell yes, we loved it!

The Legendary Music Man – Lincoln Wayne “Chips” Moman passed away June 13 – R.I.P.

Grammy-winning songwriter, producer and guitarist Lincoln Wayne “Chips” Moman, who wrote and produced hits for Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, B.J. Thomas, Dusty Springfield and many others, died at a hospice facility in his hometown of LaGrange, Georgia, on Monday, one day after his 79th birthday.

One of the most important characters in the Memphis music scene in the 60’s. Chips Moman helped start Stax Records, then American Sound Studios, which cut 122 chart hits from 1967 to 1972 — an unparalleled achievement.

Lincoln Wayne “Chips” Moman (June 12, 1937 – June 13, 2016) was an American record producer, guitarist, and songwriter. As a record producer, Moman was known for recording Elvis Presley, Bobby Womack, Carla Thomas, and Merrilee Rush, as well as guiding the career of the Box Tops in Memphis, Tennessee, during the 1960s. As a songwriter, he was responsible for standards associated with Aretha Franklin, James Carr, Waylon Jennings, and B. J. Thomas. He was asession guitarist for Franklin and other musicians.

June 11: Them released their debut album The Angry Young Them in 1965

“These five young rebels are outrageously true to themselves. Defiant! Angry! Sad! They are honest to the point of insult!” (original liner notes)

The Angry Young Them is Them’s  first album. The album was released in the UK on 11th of  June 1965. The band’s lead singer and songwriter was of course Van “The Man”  Morrison. He was with Them on only two albums before deciding to go solo.

The opening track Mystic Eyes was from an 8 or 9 minute jam originally, a long intense  jam session in the studio with Van making the words up on the spur of the moment. Oh why didn’t they use the long take? Anyway, a good opener.

If You And I Could Be As Two is the next song and it opens with Van’s spoken voice talking (rather angrily) before this wonderful soul ballad continues. Then it is Little Girl which is about watching a 14-year-old (!) school girl on her way to school,  not very acceptable these days but we need to remember that Van Morrison was only a teenager himself when he sang these words (still no excuse, I know).

Just A Little Bit by Roscoe Gordon is the next one out, Morrison sings great and it is my favorite song of the non Van Morrison penned tracks. Fantastic song!

Then we are in for the weakest track on the album, I Gave My Love a Diamond. That is not a put-down, because it’s a good sixties ballad, it just pales compared to the other songs on the album.
