Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live 12.31.78 New Years Eve concert Santa Monica CA

This concert took place just before Damn The Torpedoes came out, and it is amazing. It was released as a part of The Live Anthology Box Set, and frankly it is the best of the whole set!

Listen: Warren Zevon @ Tower Theater, Philadelphia, PA – April 22, 1980

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_message message_box_color=”mulled_wine” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-quote-left”]…. this performance captures a classic Warren Zevon show, when many believe he was at the height of his creative prowess. Near the start of the show, Zevon steps up to the microphone and exclaims: “It’s great to be back in Philadelphia… And it’s great to be in a rock and roll band!” Then, he launches into a blistering version of his hit, “Excitable Boy,” with all the bravado of a pool hall punk. A song about a high school age sociopath’s murderous prom night, this is a prime example of Zevon’s extremely macabre outlook. Later in the show, he reminds the audience: “This is one of the best audiences I have ever seen; I may go berserk!”

Listen: Warren Zevon – Classic Concert @ Auditorium le Plateau (Montreal, Quebec) – July 30, 1978

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_message message_box_color=”mulled_wine” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-quote-left”]This performance, recorded in 1978 after the release of Excitable Boy, captures that pivotal moment in time, just as Zevon was riding up the hit single charts with “Werewolves of London.” His band is a bit ragged and Zevon’s vocals are certainly an acquired taste, but his spirit and performance more than makes up for any weaknesses. Fans of that breakthrough album will be delighted here, as that material weighs heavy in this performance.

September 20: Neil Young at Farm Aid in 2008 (full set, videos)

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_message message_box_color=”mulled_wine” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-quote-left”]Just as rock & roll is loud and proud, so is Farm Aid. Farm Aid’s greatest accomplishment, I believe, is in the spirit. It’s the fact that we represent the spirit of the good fight, to keep something good happening. It just keeps getting stronger and stronger….”
– Neil Young[/vc_message][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers.

September 19: Legendary Concert – Bruce Springsteen @ Capitol Theatre, Passaic NJ 1978

bruce-springsteen-1978

The September 19th 1978 concert at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, in Bruce’s home state of New Jersey, is arguably Bruce Springsteen’s single greatest live performance. I’ve listened to quite a lot classic Springsteen bootleg concerts over the years.. this remains my favorite.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_message message_box_color=”mulled_wine” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-quote-left”]This show has been widely bootlegged under the title “Piece de Resistance”. It is a stunning concert not least with Roy Bittan’s brilliant piano playing and Max Weinberg’s clockwork drumming providing a backdrop as hard as diamonds. It also has that characteristic feature of the tour that the slow songs are played with a burning intensity while songs like “”Badlands” and “Born to Run” sometimes display a New York Punk intensity.

From brucebase: Radio broadcast, soundboard tapes (all three nights in Passaic were recorded by the Record Plant’s mobile unit, both on multi-track and live-to-two track) and professionally shot in-house black and white video. Probably one of the best all-time concert recordings. Broadcast on WNEW-FM New York and nine other stations in the north-east, including WBCN-FM and WCOZ-FM Boston, WIOQ-FM Philadelphia and WIYY-FM Baltimore. Set includes great versions of “Because The Night” and “Fire,” and also includes what many consider to be the finest examples of “Racing In The Street” and “Thunder Road” ever. Essential. Also, video footage is available. A short live excerpt from this show (Bruce’s band introduction during “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)”) was officially – and exclusively – released on a promotion-only 7″ flexidisc issued to subscribers of Austrian pop magazine “Rennbahn Express” in June 1981. Thanks to Lost in the Flood for that info. Following the show, WBCN-TV news reporter Felipe Luciano interviews Bruce. Released on CDs:

  • ‘Piece De Resistance’ (Great Dane)
  • ‘Southside Bruce And The E Street Jukes’ (Seagull)
  • ‘USA 1978’ (Arriba)
  • ‘Passaic Night’ (Crystal Cat)
  • ‘Passaic Night’ (Scorpio)

Also available on CDR ‘The Way It Was – September 19th’; a direct transfer of the radio broadcast and includes all the station breaks, chat and interviews as they were heard on WNEW. Continue reading “September 19: Legendary Concert – Bruce Springsteen @ Capitol Theatre, Passaic NJ 1978”
