Nov 22: The Beatles released With The Beatles in 1963

“With The Beatles” is the second studio album by the Beatles. It was released on 22 November 1963, on Parlophone, and was recorded four months after the band’s debut “Please Please Me”. The album features eight original compositions (seven by Lennon–McCartney and “Don’t Bother Me”, George Harrison’s first recorded solo composition and his first released on a Beatles album) and six covers (mostly of Motown and R&B hits). It remained at the top of the charts for 21 weeks, displacing Please Please Me, so that the Beatles occupied the top spot for 51 consecutive weeks. In 2003, the album was ranked number 420 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Nov 20: There’s a Riot Goin’ On by Sly and The Family Stone was released in 1971

There’s a Riot Goin’ On is the fifth studio album by American band Sly and the Family Stone, released on November 20, 1971, by Epic Records. It was recorded during 1970 and 1971 at Record Plant Studios in Sausalito, California.

The album embraces a more sombre and funkier sound than the group’s previous so-called “psychedelic soul”, as featured on Stand! (1969). Originally intended to be issued as Africa Talks to You, the record was retitled There’s a Riot Goin’ On in response to Marvin Gaye’s landmark album What’s Going On (1971), released five months before.

Nov 18: This is the Modern World by The Jam was released in 1977

This Is the Modern World is the second studio album by British band The Jam, released in November 1977, less than seven months after their debut. The front cover photography was by Gered Mankowitz.

Despite some contemporary reviewers feeling the record was rushed to capitalise on the success of In the City, the Record Mirror’s Barry Cain wrote that:

“This Is The Modern World reflects a definite PROGRESSION (remember that?) a definite identity mould. Here Weller is making an obvious attempt at creating a Jam SOUND. He succeeds. Brilliantly”.

Nov 17: Jeff Buckley was born in 1966

Jeff Buckley was a man who shunned celebrity, he had spent two years touring in support ofGrace, before recording what he intended be his next album, My Sweetheart the Drunk.

He never got to see its release. In 1997, while re-recording a few songs, Jeff Buckley drowned after going for a swim. It was ruled an accidental drowning.

It was posthumously released under the name Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk after Buckley’s mother asked for a title change because of the unfinished state of  the songs.

Nov 17: Let It Be Naked by The Beatles was released in 2003

Let It Be… Naked is a remixed and remastered version of their 1970 album Let It Be. The project was initiated by Paul McCartney, who had always felt aggrieved that Phil Spector’s production did not accurately represent the group’s “stripped-down” intentions for the original album.

Let It Be… Naked presents the songs “naked” – without Spector’s overdubs and now including the incidental studio chatter featured between most cuts of the original album. Let It Be… Naked also replaces “Dig It” and “Maggie Mae” with “Don’t Let Me Down”, originally featured as the B-side of the “Get Back” single.
