[vc_row][vc_column][vc_message message_box_color=”mulled_wine” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-quote-left”]Steve Martin here, backstage at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. It’s a cool night in Los Angeles, and as you may know or not know, the Santa Monica Civic is about a hundred yards from the beach so we have a cool breeze blowing off the ocean through the stage at our backs. The auditorium is packed, as a matter of fact, for the first David Bowie concert in the Los Angeles area. There will be one more tomorrow night, this is the concert tonight which will be recorded by RCA for the next David Bowie album and we expect to hear some new material by this British superstar. David and his group, the Spiders From Mars will enter from the other side of the stage. The auditorium is completely blacked out except for flashing strobe lights. Now the entrance music will be the Ode, or should I say the Ode To Joy which is featured in the movie Clockwork Orange and the house lights are starting to dim… here’s David Bowie.[/vc_message][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Intro & Hang On To Yourself:

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_message message_box_color=”mulled_wine” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-quote-left”]Ziggy played guitar, jamming good with weird and gilly
And the spiders from mars. he played it left hand
But made it too far
Became the special man, then we were ziggy’s band[/vc_message][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Classic concerts: Jerry Lee Lewis @ Granada TV Studios 1964 (videos)

jerry-lee-lewis-england-1964
In 1964 Jerry Lee Lewis was struggling back home in the US. He had recently moved from Sun to Smash Records, and they had a plan to get him a hit record. Just a few weeks before Landing in -England, Jerry Lee had recorded what many were sure would be his comeback hit: “I’m on Fire”. This great song never good further up than 98 on the charts, the Beatles was the new hot thing.

Jerry Lee traveled to Europe for 14 stops in England & 2 in West Germany.  On this short tour Jerry Lee gave some outstanding performances, among them this Manchester TV Special & the Hamburg Star Club concert.

He was that kind of guy. All he wanted to do was get on the damn piano and do his stuff. And it was that kind of immediacy that we were aiming for. It wasn’t controlled. It’s a dangerous thing to do, and you wouldn’t be able to do it now.
~Philip Casson (Director of the TV Special)

Van Morrison & Jerry Lee Lewis @ Hammersmith, London 1989 (videos)

van morrison and jerry lee lewis 1989

In November [1989], Van appeared with Jerry Lee Lewis at the Hammersmith Odeon, performing two songs, “Goodnight Irene” and “What´d I Say”. On the first of these, Lewis looks half stuffed, stiff back and trading phrases with Van, who badly needs a haircut, but drives the old rock´n´roller on. Lewis´s stubby fingers can still coax magic out of his grand piano.
-Brian Hinton (Celtic Crossroads)

Wonderful to see these two giants perform together.

Bruce Springsteen’s 10 best songs – Happy 69th Birthday Bruuuuuce (videos & spotify playlist)

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_message message_box_color=”mulled_wine” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-quote-left”]Well now I’m no hero
That’s understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow
Back your hair
Well the nights busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere[/vc_message][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Bruce is one of our greatest heroes. He’s still a rather young guy, and a celebration is due when he turns 69..

Here is my list of his 10 best songs.

1. Thunder Road

Marys dress sways
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that’s me and I want you only[/vc_message][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Tonight we’ll drive that dusty road from
Monroe to Angeline,
To buy you a gold ring and pretty dress of blue,
Baby just one kiss will get these things for you,
A kiss to seal our fate tonight,
A kiss to prove it all night.[/vc_message][/vc_column][/vc_row]
