There was a crack of thunder, I looked up and saw a man in a hooded windcheater rowing a tiny boat across the enclosure toward me. The water is now up to my knees. The man pulls the boat in and extends a hand that has a long thumbnail. His hand in mine feels smooth and cold, but giving. The man, who is Bob Dylan, say something like, “I like your stuff,” and before I can reply, he turns the boat around and rows back to his trailer.

Leonard Norman Cohen CC GOQ (September 21, 1934 – November 7, 2016).

Chrissie Hynde & James Walbourne – The Bob Dylan Lockdown Series (now 9 songs)

“Hi Ya’ll!

I was so buoyed up by the new Dylan songs that I talked to Pretenders Guitar playing hot-shot James Walbourne and we decided it’s a good time to do those Dylan songs we’ve always talked about doing.
Every singer-songwriter in the world covers the master’s songs and there is an endless supply of them. So we’ve started, and will do one a week until lockdown ends.

The First one is off the Shot of Love album, In The Summertime. We did it from home on our phones. I did the rhythm – sent it to James, he added guitar , sent it back to me, i put on the vocal , sent it back to him, he put on some back up vocals and organ, then we sent it to Tchad Blake to tidy up. I know you don’t need the behind the scenes details so I won’t repeat myself on the next one.

They have now  done 9 very fine Bob Dylan covers, with some nice short-films attached. I love the way sound from the short-film slips into the music sometimes.

September 20: Dire Straits released Love over Gold in 1982

Love over Gold is the fourth studio album by Dire Straits, released on 20 September 1982 by Vertigo Records internationally and by Warner Bros. Records in the United States. The album featured two singles: “Private Investigations,” which reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart, and “Industrial Disease,” which reached No. 9 on Billboard’s Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in the United States. The album reached number one on album charts in Australia, Austria, Italy, New Zealand, Norway and the United Kingdom, and No. 19 in the United States. Love over Gold was later certified gold in the United States, platinum in France and Germany and double-platinum in Canada and the United Kingdom.

I would rate a few Dire Straits albums above this, but it is an album that has played a lot on my old turntable! I got it on vinyl the week it was released, like all other record-collecting Norwegians(…at least it felt that way.)

September 19: Neil Young released After The Gold Rush in 1970 – 50 year anniversary

After the Gold Rush is the third studio album by Neil Young, released in September 1970 on Reprise Records. Gold Rush consists mainly of country folk music, along with the rocking “Southern Man”, inspired by the Dean Stockwell-Herb Bermann screenplay After the Gold Rush.

“While David Crosby yowls about assassinations, Young divulges darker agonies without even bothering to make them explicit. Here the gaunt pain of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere fills out a little—the voice softer, the jangling guitar muted behind a piano. Young’s melodies—every one of them—are impossible to dismiss. He can write ‘poetic’ lyrics without falling flat on his metaphor even when the subject is ecology or crumbling empire. And despite his acoustic tenor, he rocks plenty. A real rarity: pleasant and hard at the same time.” A+
