Bob Dylan songs that could have been movies – a playlist

Bob Dylan songs that could have been movies – a playlist

The stories these songs tell might be happy or sad, truth or fiction. But they’ll all have one thing in common: They makes us see a film inside our head, or evoke a mood that feels like a movie . We follow the stories and identify with the characters, and like real movies they are sometimes linear (like most movies) and sometimes the structure is more experimental, like Reservoir Dogs or Satyricon. A few times we cannot say why they feel cinematic but they do.

Here are my choices:

All along the watchtower – Bob Dylan (here is a great live version from 6th of June 1999 in Colarado Springs) this could obviously be made into Euro-western with a prison break theme :

October 3: Patti Smith in Stockholm Sweden 1976 – Classic concert

patti smith sweden 1976

Rising from the New York punk movement of the 70’s, Patti Smith is an influential singer and musician known for combining spoken word poetry with primal garage rock. By 1976, she had released her debut Horses and the more raw-sounding Radio Ethiopia.

Her October 3rd, 1976 concert at The Konserthuset in Stockholm, Sweden was filmed and recorded for broadcast, documenting this early stage in her career. Prior to the internet, the audio portion had been circulated among fans with the bootleg title, ‘I Never Talked To Bob Dylan,’ a slight reference to the short interview that accompanied the performance.

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings sings 10 Bob Dylan songs – Happy birthday Gillian Welch!

Happy birthday Gillian Welch, born October 2 1967.

She performs with her musical partner, guitarist David Rawlings. Their sparse and dark musical style, which combines elements of Appalachian music, bluegrass, country and Americana, is described by The New Yorker as “at once innovative and obliquely reminiscent of past rural forms.”

Edit: here is one more (now we’ve found 10), Abandoned Love:

Here are some great Bob Dylan cover versions:

Gillian Welch sings Bob Dylan’s Rambling, Gambling Willie during early morning sound check in Lyons Colorado (2016?):

October 2: Let it Be by The Replacements was released in 1984

“If ever an indie-rock album felt like freedom, like an adventure, or like the heartache, joy, ridiculousness, angst and celebration of life itself, it was Let It Be.”
Jim McGuinn (The Current)

Let It Be is the third studio album by American rock band The Replacements. It was released on October 2, 1984 by Twin/Tone Records. A post-punk album with coming-of-age themes, Let It Be was recorded by the band after they had grown tired of playing loud and fast exclusively as on their 1983 Hootenanny album; the group decided to write songs that were, according to vocalist Paul Westerberg, “a little more sincere.”

“Playing that kind of noisy, fake hardcore rock was getting us nowhere, and it wasn’t a lot of fun. This was the first time I had songs that we arranged, rather than just banging out riffs and giving them titles.”
– Paul Westerberg
