“Restless Farewell” was recorded on October 31, 1963 in Columbia Recording Studios, New York City and released on his third studio album The Times They Are a-Changin’ in 1964. It is based on the Scottish folk song “The Parting Glass“.

The blues was born at the turn of the century in the Mississippi Delta and other regions of the South. It would become the cornerstone of all popular American music. This is its story as told by the artists who lived it.

Produced and directed by Jay Levey, executive produced by Levey and Richard Foos (the man who founded Rhino Records as well as Shout!), with Edward Marritz directing photography and Mark Mandler serving as the sound engineer, the film also counts Jim O’Neal (the founder of Living Blues magazine and owner of Rooster Blues) as executive consultant and associate producer. What a great production crew.

Hubert Sumlin, guitarist with Howlin’ Wolf for many years, tells a story about his mother telling him that if he wanted to do church music, he should do church music. Long Time Gone is a song by Bob Dylan, first officially released at the Bootleg Series Vol. 9: The Witmark Demos: 1962–1964, an album of demo recordings Bob Dylan made for his first two publishing companies, Leeds Music and M. Witmark & Sons, from 1962 to 1964. According to Bobdylan.com he played the song twice, once in 1962 and once in 1963.

The music of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s when music was at that root level—that for me is meaningful music. The singers and musicians I grew up with transcend nostalgia—Buddy Holly and Johnny Ace are just as valid to me today as then.
